Classical music singer Savita Devi will be conferred the Madhya Pradesh government's National Tansen Award, a minister said Tuesday.
Culture and Public Relations Minister Laxmikant Sharma said that the decision to bestow National Tansen Award for the year 2010-11 on Savita Devi, of the Benaras Gharana, has been taken unanimously by the selection committee constituted for the award.
Along with the award to be conferred at the Tansen Sangeet Samaroh at Gwalior on Dec 9, 2011., Savita Devi will be given Rs. 2 lakh, a honour plaque, a shawl and coconut.
Daughter of renowned singer Siddheshwari Devi, Savita Devi was born at Varanasi and trained under guidance of her mother. She has done deep practice (riyaz) in "purab ang gayaki" of Benaras Gharana apart from attaining excellence in thumri, dadra, kajri, chaiti and thappa.
She has also got guidance from Pandit Mani Prasad and Pandit Dilip Chandra Vedi.
